Fewer people are taking beach holidays
Holidaymakers opt for activity breaks
31 July 2008An increasing number of people are choosing to avoid the beach and be more active on holiday, according to the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO).
Holidaymakers are turning away from the traditional beach break as they see their holiday abroad as an opportunity to learn a new skill or to get into shape by doing intensive activities.
Ian Bradley, spokesperson for AITO, said: "People are feeling that they want to be more active on holiday rather than just purely relaxing on the beach or just doing a city break."
Activity holidays are also ideal for employees who want to take a break but are worried about missing too much work during the current economic climate, claims the AITO.
"You don''t have to take three weeks off to do an adventure holiday or an activity holiday you can do it pretty quickly as well, without taking too much time off work," added Mr Bradley.
Research by ebookers.com revealed that just 12 per cent of people thought that holidays were a luxury despite the rising cost of living.
