British children prefer to holiday abroad

British kids are used to travelling abroad

01 August 2008

A significant number of British children have spent more of their holiday time in foreign locations than at home, according to a new survey.

Research by Travelodge revealed that one in ten youngsters has never visited a UK beach and prefer to go abroad for their holidays with Spain being the most visited country by British children.

A travel editor puts the figures down to the availability of cheap flights to European regions which are more attractive to families who want to avoid the stress of a potentially long drive to a UK beach.

Elizabeth Young, editor of Travel for Kids, said: "It''s easy and cheap to go abroad. With inexpensive airlines, families can plan a weekend in Barcelona, for example, more easily than having to drive to the beach in the UK."

Such is the popularity of foreign holidays among children that many cannot locate British beaches on a map with 17 per cent of children thinking that Blackpool is in the south.

According to the survey by Travelodge, 78 per cent of British children own a passport.
