British tourists have a bad reputation

Brits keen to avoid countrymen

26 August 2008

A new study has found that a large number of British holidaymakers are shying away from traditional tourist destinations because of the behaviour of their compatriots.

According to Expedia''s 2007 Best Tourist League, British people remain in the league''s top five worst tourists and foreign hoteliers voted them as the worst behaved of all nationalities prompting fellow Brits to holiday elsewhere.

Research by Cater Allen revealed that 52 per cent of British holidaymakers are opting for alternative locations in order to avoid their countrymen because they believe British tourists behave badly on holiday.

Sally Watts, director of marketing at Cater Allen, said: "Britons are becoming more discerning about where they holiday and are keen to avoid stereotypes of British unruliness abroad.

"Indeed, today''s international Britons are far removed from this image, preferring luxury lodges and holidays that reflect their ambitions."

The study by Cater Allen found that 36 per cent of Brits desire a luxury villa on a beach as their ideal holiday accommodation.
